Aluminum Foil Keeps Things Colder Kids

Apr 15, 2020 · Aluminum does not keep things cold, but does act as a barrier to oxygen and vapor, which can transfer heat to the frozen food when it is exposed to air. It also prevents germs, odors and flavors from escaping or entering the packaged food. Aluminum is known for being a good conductor, but it is also a good insulator, as it reflects the radiation of heat back to its source.

In order to retard heat flow, there must be an internal air space between the aluminum and the area that needs insulation. A foam board insulation backed with aluminum foil is commonly used to insulate residential homes. This prevents heat loss inside the home during winter and reflects back and keeps out the heat during warmer months.

An aluminum foil keeps the food warm, but placing the foil directly on the object or food doesn’t help much. It doesn’t only keep the food warmer for long, but also keep things cold.It acts as barrier to the oxygen and air which can transfer heat to the cold or frozen food.

To best accomplish both aims, keep your food and drinks in an insulated cooler with some ice or a frozen gel pack. If they're not at hand, however, you might need to improvise with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Neither material provides especially good insulation in its own right, but both can help in a pinch. Purpose. Hypothesis-I think aluminum foil will keep things colder because of the physical make up of aluminum foil compared to that of plastic which is clear and can be seen through. If then aluminum foil on the other hand can not be seen through therefore I think this is why aluminum keeps things colder because it is protected from the light slowing down drop in temperature.

Aluminum foil is a metal and metal is good at conducting [the reason metal is cold is because when you touch it,it absorbs your heat energy and it feels cold]. Plastic wrap is what keeps things colder because its surface is very dense which means it can absorb more heat more easier than metal so the answer is …

Since aluminum foil has a lot of surface area and is very thin and heat travels within aluminum very well, it is going to cool off very quickly in air when you remove it from the oven. In addition, since thin foil doesn't weigh much and thus can't hold much "heat," when you touch it not much heat can transfer to your fingers and thus it doesn't feel particularly warm.

Jul 31, 2018 · An area that is already hot will be kept hot by aluminum foil, as it will hold in hot air. Paper and cotton will release heat at a quicker rate than aluminum foil. Aluminum foil can keep things like wires or pipes insulated, as it traps air when it is wrapped around an object.

The effect of trhe aluminum foil on the cooling depends on details. Since the foil wraps around the food, the main directions it conducts heat don't matter. The heat flow is at right angles to the foil surface. The shielding of the radiation by the foil should help reduce the heat flow.

Convection is a lot like conduction. Conduction is the transfer of heat or cold between two objects. For example, if you sit down on a pile of snow, your backside will get colder, and the snow will get warmer. With convective heat loss, however, the cold object is moving -- like a cold wind. The wind takes the warmth away from whatever it touches.

Tips for using: It’s a good idea to wrap a snug layer of foil around plastic-wrapped foods you plan to freeze (like meat in its unopened packaging), because it keeps out oxygen, which causes freezer burn. Definitely don’t use it in the microwave, and never wrap acidic foods, like tomatoes and berries, in foil. The acids react with the aluminum, leaving a harmless but unsightly blue residue.

$\begingroup$ Aluminum is the radiation/convection insulator. You use another layer to prevent conduction, for example, paper/cardboard, or very commonly a plastic bag which because is hanging is only in contact with the surrounding air , which is a bad conductor, so in total you get total insulation. $\endgroup$ – Santropedro Jul 9 '19 at 22:02
